  1. In the Latin quarter (5th arrondissement south of Notre Dame) you'll find a lot of bookstores. The most famous is Gibert Jeune. It's got a bright yellow awning, hard to miss.

Otherwise in the Forum des Halles mall at Chatelet-les-Halles you have a FNAC store. There are others in Paris. Department stores also have a book section and you'll find a lot of smaller bookstores all over Paris without having to look too hard.

Google Gibert Jeune and FNAC for more info.

Edit: I hope you're not going to Paris just to buy books, you can buy French books in other countries or online too. Although I'll have to admit buying books in Paris is the best experience. So much choice and variety from the bouquinistes along the Seine to the large stores and everything in between.

  2. Choco BN knows his stuff and is right.

FNAC is the most common bookstore (there's one in "les Halles - Chatelet"

The Virgin megastore is also in Paris.

along the Seine, you'll find many 2nd hand book sellers
