  1. it means they are of a higher caste... meaning they are wealthy... the poor have to work outside... thus making their skin dark... the wealthy stay indoors.... the whiter the skin... the more wealthy and better family it looks like they are from

  2. It is just a phase.  Lots of people wish they were white.  Look at Michael Jackson.  He has the white wannabees real bad.  People should be happy with who they are and stop trying to be someone they never will be.

  3. My Grandfather lives there and owns a club, and he is looked upon like royalty, due to his skin colour, the native of Philippines want to be associated with white people as to come across as they are important, as the white people are thought to be very wealthy and the country is very poor, and if you work for a white person you are more upper class.  Sad isn't it.

My Grandfather said the philippines are the nicest people, very caring and very very hard workers, but their own government wont take care of them.  He has helped many families and has become life long friends with them.

He says they are a beautiful race, he even married a Philippine Lady, she is beautiful and they have 2 beautiful children, and she is just gorgeous.  He is very happy there and doesn't wish to move back to Australia.

  4. kasi ang mga pilipino ay maiitim at gusto nilang maging maputi upang maging kaakit-akit ang kanilang mga itsura me too im half pilipino and half chinese me? ako kayumanggi ako,,,un ang dahilan kaya gusto nilang pumuti at gustu nila ang anak nila maputi

  5. I have a aunt from the Philippines and she told me that she wants to be white because it is different.  Just like here in the US, we want to be tan because we are light skinned (If ur are Caucasian. I don't want to offend anyone).  It's the opposite over there, they are all dark skinned and they want to look different, so they buy like skin whiting lotion and stuff like that.  Just like Americans buy tanning lotion.

  6. In many 3rd world and poorer countries, historically, paler or darker skin would indicate one's class as the poorer classes often worked outdoors for long hours and had darker skin as a result. This has become part of the culture in the Philipines and the current popularity of skin whitening products is an extension of this.

Similarly in Europe during the 19th century, women used parasols to keep the sun off and keep their skins pale, as a woman with dark skin was always assumed to be from the lower working classes.

  7. Because of the western media. the Media gives off the impression to people that your life will be better if you are white. and it also teaches that white is beautiful and you can only be pretty if you are white.

of course this is wrong thinking. i think the media would put more people of ethnic backgrounds in the media people wouldn't feel the need so much to look white.

i think people should be proud of however they look.

  8. Becoz they like to be so

  9. I believe it's human nature - when you're fair-skinned, you want to be darker, and vice versa. The same way people want it cold when it's hot, and want it hot when it's cold. "Grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" syndrome. Most folks are never satisfied.

  10. it makes them look better, i live in the Philippines, I'm basically from Korea and I see tons of advertisements of skin whitening products, whitening lotion whitening soap, its like they are obsessed with being white, I'm white and happy, yet sometimes I wish I was dark, because of my darkish pigments under my eyes, because of addiction to technology and sleeping late, haha I can't help it. So yeah they want to be white to look better, they think they will be prettier, in some way it makes them look richer, younger, etc..They should be proud of their color and looks, they should be proud of themselves, they have a nation!

  11. Because they want to be.

  12. Its simple. Colonial mentality. Actually this issue is a problem with other Southeast Asian country & the Indian subcontinent.  I heard that in Thailand, white people are regarded as an upper-class people while the typical brown-skinned people are regarded as lowly blue-collar workers.

Also, I agree with the first & last answerer. It drives me nuts everytime I go to the grocery store in Manila and find tons of whitening products lining up on the shelves and seeing those stupid advertisements on tv & billboards on the road with a message that "white is beautiful". People want to stand out w/c is why Southeast Asians want to become white.

  13. the same reason white people lay in the sun to get brown, i suppose. go figure.
