  1. They are nearly the same.  Just a different terminology, although telephoto lenses are designed specifically for photography and long focal length lenses include lenses like spotting scopes and telescopes.


  2. A telephoto lens is a lens that is physically shorter than its focal length.  Long focal length photographic lenses are usually telephoto to reduce their weight.
