  1. The old generation Pokemon only /commonly/ appear in Route 225, Route 226, Route 227, Route 228, Route 229, Route 230, Stark Mountain, Iron Island, and the Spring Path. All of these places open up after you beat the Elite Four and/or obtain the National Dex.

To get to Route 225 - 230 and Stark Mountain, you'll have to visit your rival's house and talk to his mom. (Not Lucas or Dawn. The blonde boy who's always in a hurry.) She'll tell you that he headed off to Snowpoint City (or something to that effect). You should go there too. Head to the Sailor standing next to a boat at the dock in Snowpoint. (He's southwest of the Pokemon Center.) Talk to him and you'll be able to go to a place called the Battle Zone. From this initial area you can reach all the Routes between 225 and 230, and Stark Mountain.

To get to Iron Island simply talk to the Sailor standing next to a boat in the dock at Canalave City. He'll offer to take you to one of three places (depending if you've unlocked Darkrai's event and Cresselia's event. You'll need to wait for an event to unlock Darkrai's event, or you'll have to use an AR. For Cresselia, go into the house closest to the dock and talk to the little boy and his mother. Then go outside; the Sailor will say that that was his family, and that his son is ill. He'll ask you to go to a place called Fullmoon Island, where Cresselia will be found. From then on, you can visit Fullmoon Island from the dock.) Iron Island will be one of the three places; at Iron Island I'm pretty sure you can find some 3rd and 1st gen ground/dark/flying/rock/steel types. Maybe some 2nd gen ones, but I cannot remember.

The Spring Path is found on the route south of Veilstone City. (Route 214.) Run alongside the trees on the route; you'll eventually find an opening in the 'wall' that wasn't there before. On Spring Path you can find Noctowl, Bibarel, Chimecho, and a few other past gen Pokemon.

To find more past generation Pokemon, you'll have to look for what's called a 'swarm' Pokemon. A swarm is when a specific type of Pokemon that isn't normally found in Sinnoh can be found exclusively for a day. You can figure out what your swarm is, and where it is, by visiting your partner's house. (Lucas or Dawn's house; it's in Sandgem Town.) Talk to his/her little sister; she'll tell you what your swarm is and where it is located. You can find out what type of Pokemon can be swarm Pokemon on http://www.serebii.net/diamondpearl/swar...

Just keep checking everyday and you might get a swarm Pokemon that you like. =)

Also, if you have a copy of Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, FireRed, or LeafGreen inserted into the GameBoy slot of your DS, certain past gen Pokemon may show up on certain routes. Some past gen Pokemon only show up after you've used the PokeRadar. (Which can be obtained after you beat the game. Lucas/ Dawn will give it to you in Sandgem. An example of PokeRadar-only Pokemon are Nidoran males and females; they can be found on Route 201.) Look through Serebii's Pokedex to discover which Pokemon are found where. http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-dp/

I hope this helped, and good luck! =D
