In poker when do you increase blinds?

what are the rules for increasing the blinds? when? why? and how?

I have found the rules for blinds increasing varies.  If you're playing at a local poker tournament it is usually up to the tournament director or the league.

If you're playing online then it varies.  For example:

1.  Turbo games the blinds increase every couple of minutes.

2.  Have poker games where the blinds increase every 6 minutes.

3.  The standard is 10 minutes.

4.  However you have some sit and go tournaments where the blinds when the button has made full circle.

in the game i play our blinds go up every 20  minutes   .you can set you own rules for your own home game

mainly to sped up the action and they double every time

Each poker tournament sets its own blind structure which means the amount of time for each level and the amount of the blinds at each level.  As time passes it's necessary to increase them otherwise the tournament could go on forever.  

Here's a tip though.  The slower the blinds go up the bigger a role skill plays and the faster they go up the more luck has to do with it.  So if you're a good player you want the slpwer blind structures generally and if not you want the faster ones.

When it comes back to the first person who got the dealer chip.  So basically a full turn around the table.

It's done so the game won't take forever.  When the blinds are increased, the game is guaranteed to be over at some point in time.  If the blinds stayed the same, the game can literally last forever.

The blinds are increased by doublling it.
