i have heard polish people greeting other polish people by adding a K toward the end of thier names, for example, dorota becomes dorotka, and paulina becomes paulinka.

i thought this was a simple way of saying that the person you are greeting is beautiful, until i used it on a girl, adding a K towards the end of her name, and she told me that its a simple way of saying i dont like them?? :s

confused isnt the word

which definition is correct if any???

any hlp is appreciated

thanks

  1. It's a simple diminutive, like "Jane" becomes "Janey" or "John" becomes "Johnny". Polish uses them a lot. It doesn't mean you think the person is beautiful. It's just familiar.

Like in English, you use the diminutive usually positively, but sometimes negatively.

Like calling your friend George "Georgie" is probably positive.

If you say, "Oh yeah, Georgie Bush", it's probably negative.

  2. i only know that when you add K to the name it makes it sound nicer or something.. its kinda like instead of saying mike u say mikey...
