Question:

In professional sports -Why are women not only less gifted, but less commited and intense than men?

Whether it be women who reach a point while in the prime of their career where they'd rather be cover models than successful in their sport, whether they're lackadaisical (relative to men) on the field, whether they're eschewing a big time historic sport event in their division to instead garner more attention participating as a sideshow in another unrelated event. Taking entire seasons off to have children. Retiring in their prime because " it feels like the right time". --

Discuss.

{Being less gifted is enough in itself; on top of that they've been shown at the top of the game to be less committed and intense as well!?!--- >and why again is there any criticism offered as to why women's sport isn't as successful ?< }

  1. Because men by nature are extremely competitive.

  2. While this may be true for a general sample of women compared to a similar sample of men, there are always exceptions. I have a friend who is a professional triathlete, she trains 3 times a day for 2 hours each session, on top of that she graduated with a degree in Mathematical Statistics....if that isn't commitment and intensity then i don't know what is.

  3. I guess us women just aren't as committed to sports as much as men (most not all). It's more like an animal instinct for men to conquer over other men. But us women don't have the instincted to do this. Us women would rather have the joy of children and we are more into education then sports. My twin brother was into sports and I was into my education, just instinct. But I will say I love to do gymnastics. I am committed to that sport, I've been doing it since I was 4. But I would honestly say I would put it aside to have a family.=3

  4. Well...if I presume for a moment that what you say is true....

I think it's probably a vicious cycle type of thing. Because there are less people that care about women's sports, there are less women athletes who can remain as intense and committed as men can. It's blindingly EASY to remain intense and committed to your sport when you have thousands of fans and packed stadiums cheering you on, and people genuinely APPRECIATE YOU. It's another matter entirely when nobody cares about you or your sport. It's a lot harder to stay committed or intense.

  5. I would say men are definetly more gifted in some sports than women. Men have more muscle mass and when muscle counts men excell. Other sports women do good at because their bodies are designed for it. That is why so many women are in gymnastics. They are flexable and can do so much more than men.

Women also dont work through their pain like men. I agree with the previous post. Men just suck it up. Men also treat sports as something to defeat. You play a sport to win not to be a good sport or to have fun. Thats why men's sports pull so many more viewers. Men will do anything to win and that makes things interesting. Pluss like you say women love to do all this fashion side show c**p. Indy car racing has so much drama now because or its women drivers such as Danica Patrick. Almost every week she has some drama pluss she is always trying to make more money doing fashion stuff. NASCAR has no women drivers and when their is a problem the guys just wreck each other. Its alot more entertaining pluss their is less drama wich makes the sport better. Yes their still is some but their is alot less. People for the most part dont like to watch drama when they are watching sports. Thats something that should be reserved for tv shows.

  6. i don't think that's fully true. women aren't less dedicated. They just have more distraction

Some women get pregnant (if you're pregnant, i doubt you'll be doing whatever sport you're doing.)

and women tend to have me awareness of pain. some study showed women has more feelings (physical) and possible receptor for pain.

  7. Women's sport isn't as successful because the majority of people that watch sport aren't as interested from a sociological point.

But who cares? I feel sorry for sports people specially if they are gifted. Yes the glory and awe would be amazing and getting paid for a job that they have a passion for. But to know that your success and 'gift' has only what 10 - 15 years left? That must be very harsh.

I am lucky to be gifted at art and music and that's something that you can do for the rest of your life until you die.

  8. There is no evidence for this.

*The Bejiing Olympics are coming up. There will be female athletes competing there from all over the globe. SURPRISE!

    Duh.

  9. The primary women's sport I've watched has been basketball. I've had season tickets to UNC and Duke women's college basketball and have attended multiple final fours as well as multiple ABL and WNBA games and have seen women play basketball in the Olympics. I know that many of the women who played professionally first in the ABL and later in the WNBA use to play overseas professionally-since they valued women's professional basketball years before the US did. These women sacrificed their personal lives by living and working overseas because of their love of the sport and many kept playing after they should have retired because they loved the game-just like many men do. Many women US pro basketball players have been "stars" overseas but not in the US until the last few years.

A few have had kids but surprisingly not many-but males sports figures don't have to worry about how fatherhood will affect their health and livelihood - do they? If anything-these professional sports women are castigated for not being "feminine" enough-so Lisa Leslie has been a dream come true-she was the WNBA poster girl for a long time since she's so "pretty" and feminine. But I believe Lisa Leslie was a model before she became a well-known basketball star. Men don't have to deal with the stigma of homophobia that female sports figures do-as a matter of fact-male sports stars are rewarded and considered even more "masculine" for doing what they love to do. The WNBA tried to find at least a few "feminine" women to use as their poster girls to try to ward off the assumption that only dykes like sports.

I admire Dawn Staley for the preserverence she has shown-she should have retired years earlier from basketball because of her knees-but she is one stubborn woman and played in the Olympics when she was 34-which is a bit old for a basketball player to be playing-but she has amazing spirit and drive-which lead to her becoming a three-time Olympian.

I also was amazed by Cynthia Cooper who played pro-basketball until she was 37 for the WNBA and came back and tried to play again at 40 as well asTeresa Weatherspoon who didn't retire from the WNBA until she was 39. These women sure could play some incredible basketball.
