In reference to PBX phone systems, what exactly is a node?

I am trying to figure out the phone system at work and need some help.

  1. A node is a segment of the PBX.  In larger PBX's the system is broken down into smaller groups, nodes or loops (the name depends on the manufacturer).  These nodes handle some of the smaller, more common computing functions and then report that information back to the main CPU.  This does not slow down the main CPU with every single request made by a telephone.


  2. A node is any phone on the system.
