  1. The Bible says, "Spare the rod and spoil the child." Did you ever wonder why? Little children are very capable of disobedience and rebellion, but they do not have the capacity to understand reasoning. That is why corporal punishment is used. That is what they understand, and that is what works for the most part, when it is done carefully and gently. As they grow older, different things can be used to modify their behavior, but if they've learned their lessons early, they won't have much to worry about.

The problems in schools today relate to parents not disciplining their children at home. A long time ago, physical punishment was the norm, and if a child were punished at school, he could expect to be punished again at home. Those were days when the whole community took very seriously its responsibility to train the kids in proper behavior. Sure, there were abuses! But schools were able to actually teach the kids then. Now, everyone is afraid to touch anyone for any reason, and the kids know they can do whatever they please without consequences. And that produces things that are worse than abuse!

We can't go back to corporal punishment without all the rest that goes with it, and since we don't have the rest (community standards of moral behavior) we can't do that either.

Until we reach the hearts of the parents so that they understand their responsibilities, corporal punishment at school will be worse than worthless; it will foster rebellion of the worst kind.

  2. I am mostly against corporal punishment.  If parents take care of disciplining kids (and teach them self-discipline), schools don't have to do as much discipline.  There are kids that need it, but they are very, very few.

  3. I'm ethically and morally against corporal punishment. Yet, as a teacher, it would make it so much easier to deal with students. There culture we live in has basically stripped teachers of their ability to create consequences that kids are scared of. We are left with their answer of :'why should I?'.  I think it is easier for kids to obey do this or you'll be physically punished, as opposed to do this or you'll get a detention. What's a detention when you weren't planning on doing anything at lunch?

Once again, I'm  against corporal punishment. I think it emotionally scars it's victims. But at the same time, more learning occured in the classroom.

Then again (thinking as I write), perhaps the culture of today's kids would result in some serious after hours revenge if it were still functioning today.

  4. I would say that I'm against it. I believe it's the parents job to discipline their children. What right is it for someone else to do it. And I don't mean abuse either.
