In response: Having a knife in Italy?

What is wrong with people?

I ask a simple question and no one can give me an answer except to spout their opinions?

Thats why my question was so lengthy, to begin with- to avoid morons.

1) I'm a woman

2) I'm going to be there for a whole month

I know I will be doing some travelling within the country solo.

So tell me is it better to get mugged or rapped than to carry a knife for protection?

Like I said in my last lengthy question to show my wit and non cumpulsion. I have a knife I always carry. Nothing to extreme. Folding - about 3 in- give our take.

I have NEVER used it - I believe most things can be resolved or gotton out of. And I have had issues b4.

But in a extreme situation where I have to fight for my life I will.

  1. if you get found with a knife they could arrest you. Some tips, don't wear jewellery of fancy watches. These are what theives look for. Never carry a handbag or anybag hung around your shoulder (they can easily be cut and pulled of!) Have a small rucksack and wear it in front of you , because on your back someone can but their hand in etc. when you are out and about take them minium that you need. There are such things as invisible travel pouches which you put around your waist and it is hidden under your trousers. (in there you can keep you passport/credit cards.) I live in italy and near naples, i have been there on my own and have never had trouble. its all about not standing out. Wear simple clothing as well. Never put yourself in situations where you will have to walk alone at night/or down empty roads etc. If you in a big city find out what time the last buses or metro are so you will not be stuck anywhere in the middle of nowhere on your own. Have fun its a beautiful country and don't worry!

  2. Legal or not, do you know how to use a knife as a weapon?

You don't want someone to take that weapon away from you and use it on you. That would be my concern.

I don't know what the rules are in Italy for carrying a knife but before you buy one check with a law enforcer. They are banned in most countries and you could get in alot of trouble for carrying.

Good Luck. While traveling, don't go down dark alleys alone or with anyone. Always travel where there are people. Be aware of your surroundings. Stay under the radar. Don't flash money or jewelry.

Check out the laws of Italy.)

  3. take a sharp pair of scissors and keep a tin of beans in it too use as a club in case the scissors get jammed between the ribs,  i don't think either are illegal in italy

  4. Italian man are not like the once you are used to, Italy is full of beautiful woman so why settle for less, if you don't like the person approaching say so, no one will bother.

  5. Italy is so safe!  I studied there and walked alone all the time even at night and never worried.  Men will follow you and try and talk with you but won't touch you (just annoy you).  As for the knife, one guy at my school had a pocket knife on his key chain and somehow a cop saw and arrested him.  The only reason the whole thing was dropped was b/c the head of our school took care of it.  I wouldn't carry one, you don't need it!

  6. There is no shortage of knives in Italy. Italy is full of knives. Switchblades, anything you want on sale. OK? Very lax laws there.

  7. Perhaps you should ask people in Yahoo Italy! I just can speak for Germany and here it's allowed to carry a knife ...but not all kind of knives! When you go to a museum you have to leave your bag on the checkroom so that's no problem. But I don't think that a knife really can protect you in all situations but Italy isn't very dangerous...I've been there several times and never had problems!
