  1. It depends on where you are going in Colorado.  It does snow in the mountains as early as September.  In fact, we were camping out in the Sangre de Christo mountains and got snowed in one late September week.

You cannot ski or anything winter related in September.  It is a good time of the year weather wise though to travel to Colorado.

Among the things to do... it depends on if you want to do more of the city thing or the mountain thing.  Denver and Colorado Springs are good cities to chill in and do the typical city vacation.  As for good regions to camp, fish and hike.. look at the region from Gunnison to Lake City and then west to Durango.  That range of mountains is beautiful and is not over crowded at all in September.  You can rent jeeps and drive over the mountains thru the passes and visit ghost towns.  Good trout fishing in all the streams out there too.

  2. Yes, it can and has, even onto the adjacent high plains just east of the mountains on rare occasions. By late in the month it is not unusual for the higher mountains to start getting their seasonal snows.
