  1. Boning is a plastic material that you use to help keep a fabric stiff while being worn, such as a halter top or the top of a wedding dress.  You can read more instructions & helpful tips on boning at the first link below.

The casing is the area of fabric that you will sew the boning into. The instructions mean for you to make the casing be 3/8" wide so that the bone enters there.

  2. Boning is plastic or metal stiffening strips that are used to support a garment.  Generally, strapless dresses or corsets are the first place you think of boning being used, but boning can also be used for such things as stabilizing a square neckline, shaping a waist area, even helping form a sleeve.

The casing is just a cloth pocket into which the boning is slipped.

Choice of boning material is dependent on how much support is needed.  http://www.farthingales.on.ca/bones.html is a supplier of a number of types of boning.

  3. Have you ever worn a corset?  Boning is the wire that is inside a corset.  It helps keep the structure.

Casing - A tunnel that’s made from two layers or an edge of fabric that’s folded over. You use it to hold a drawstring or elastic.
