In some European countries, if coal is transported in open railway trucks the top is sprayed with a solution of lime. Why?

  1. not sure, but if the 'top' is exposed, so the wind from transport will not blow the loose coal fragments away.

  3. to layer the top of the coal box some no coal dust or pieces get into the air and is safe for travel this is also done if transported by truck from rail'

  4. I can only surmise thast if the coal is ground very fine they might be concerned about dust flying off. The cola we haul is a bit coarser and I have never noticed any dust or particles coming off the cars.
