more specific, how was her childhood. doesnt the movie start when shes in the convent, it doesnt really show anything about her early years...

Maria's childhood and parents are not discussed in the movie or play because they are not important.  There are a million reasons why Maria could've wound up in the convent, but it wouldn't matter to the accurate portrayal of her in the play.  Everything you need to know about Maria is in there.  The most that you know about her is that she knows "these hills like the back of my hand" when it comes time to escape.  More may be revealed in the book, but the information given in the movie is enough.
