Im 14 and have done 5 years of karate. I enter competitions and allways find it hard to defend back kicks and people who rn at you with punches. Have you any tips to stop them or beat them, not just in sparing but real street fighting.

I am Skinny and about 5 foot 7

  1. back kicks are easy to avoid, once you see him start to turn take a few steps back and you'll be out of his range.

to quote the karate kid movie "best block, no be there"

and as the brawler charges try a front kick or a foot sweep, another good one is as he is coming in step back into a flying front kick, It's a tough one to read and he is already walking into it

  2. well for someone who kick just step in on them so you are to close for them to kick you.

for somone who runs at you with punches step to the side and punch him in the side of the head.

  3. Take down?  you've got the wrong art .... you mean KO or TKO the opponent obviously right?  I can't wait to see the answers you're going to get ..... hehehe.

  4. side step then counter

  5. Back kicks you just gotta see them then grab or parry. Rushing is simple, "if they go high you go low". Tackle, knee kick, groin kick, sweep, trip, or go down like your gonna tackle them then grab the side of their pants and fist em in the balls then shift to their back wrap both arms around their waist and suplex them onto the back of their head.

  6. By "take down" I assume you mean Knock Out or disable. I really dislike most Karate stances and lets be honest, the blocks are very inefficient.

Brawlers make for an awkward situation for almost any fighter. Does he run at you with hay makers? straight punches? It's hard to help if I don't know what exactly he is doing. If he's using straight punches, guard your face. Forget about body blocks and deep stances. Watch a few kickboxing/muay thai videos.

In a street fight you'll most likely be up against an angry person throwing hay makers. You can either step back from them, try keep your distance and play it safe, or duck/parry one and get in close. Though, Karate doesn't train much (if any) boxing, so even if you manage to make those necessary counters, you'll have to do your best at swinging from unatural positions (since Karate is very ridgid in its training).

As for the back kick, I've never found them a problem. Try grab one if you can, but make sure you WILL be able to grab it. If he's 10x your size and 5x as fast as you can react, it's not a good idea. Once you grab the kick, he's stuck with his back turned to you, so step in (make sure your guard is up) and go for the knockout with whatever punches you can dish out.

I tried to base it around Karate as much as I could...I train Muay Thai, so naturally my methods are different than yours.

  7. Either step into it so that you are too close for the foot to hit the mark

    or

Step out of range so that the kick misses you altogether.

    The BEST method is avoidance...

Stay out of a situation where anybody would throw a punch or attempt a kick!

  8. take them to the ground

  9. I've never had a street fight but I have fought in a few competitions.

I find that when fighting against a puncher it is important to remember that your legs are (probably) longer than their arms. If you can get them to run on to a side kick a few times they might start being a bit more defensive.

A good way to defend against the back kick is move forwards and to the opposite side so you can strike while they are still off balance. However, if you are feeling a little bit cocky you could try a spinning rear leg sweep. Its a high risk move that requires total commitment, but if you pull it off you will be a hero.

  10. move off of angles, not just straight back.

  11. Drill each of the Kata that you know about 100 times in your spare time, then an hour before bed time, for one hour, meditate to empty your mind.  To empty your mind, relax and breathe first and "ease" yourself into it.

Then at the moment of truth, don't think, just fight.

    good luck.

  12. side step,or get close so that he cannot connect,or kick his kick, hope this helps

  13. What ever your plan is you just gotta stick to it. Don't let the fact that hes a Brawler alter you. Just fight as technically sound as you can.
