I got laid off but my last day is not until end of this year. I will be getting 10 weeks of severance pay check in lump sum. My question is am I still eligible for unemployment benefit while I'm getting severance payment or will they not give me any unemployment benefit until my severance payment runs out??

  1. The purpose of unemployment compensation is to provide you funds for survival due to a loss of income.  Until severance funds have fully been paid out (in your case 10 weeks after the 10 week lump sum has been paid out) you are not in the position of loss of income and therefore are not eligible for unemployment compensation.

  2. Normally you won't get unemployment while you are still getting severance pay.  Go ahead and apply - there will be a place on the application to report the severance pay
