  1. There are two types of investing in stocks - technical and fundamental.

In technical investing, investors pay attention to the stock chart and take their buy and sell signals from what they see there. They look at things like whether the short-term average prices (like a 50-day moving average) are crossing longer term average prices (like a 200-day moving average) and decide that an important trend is changing. What is working from a technical analysis standpoint is always changing, because once some signal starts to work, investors discover it and pile into it.

In fundamental investing, investors learn about what companies actually make and do. They try to figure out whether the company they're studying is likely to have the right product to take advantage of a trend, or whether they just have a killernew product. In order to succeed in fundamental investing, investors need to work hard to figure out everything there is to know about some little corner of the stock market - sneaker companies, vitamin companies, restaurant companies, whatever. Pick something you're really interested in and study all the companies that do it. When you know a lot about an industry, you'll start to be the first to know what's going to succeed and which company has it, and you'll know what stocks are going to outperform the market.

    Good luck -
