Now I know it means to skip a gear on the way up from 1st to 5th (or 6th). But does it mean you skipped a gear on accident or on purpose? if its on purpose why would you do that? and doesn't it hurt the engine/transmission?

  1. The same thing it means in any kind of racing except those are legal and street racing is not

  2. "Miss a gear" usually means you let the clutch out before the transmission is completely in gear. It happens when you get in a hurry, if you have a bad transmission, or if you're inexperience. It usually results in revving the engine up and grinding the gear.

  3. You know, you don't shift into 5th for a while and you start to miss it......you know.

  4. No it doesn't mean you SKIPPED a gear.

It means the driver was trying to shift real fast, and he let the clutch out before the shifter correctly shifted (messed up the shift).

    Good Luck....

  5. If you have a stick, novice drivers usually miss the shift from 3rd to 4th gear because of how 3rd gear is not right above the 4th gear. It puts COLOSAL stress on your engine, because you're in the red while going at some MPH you're not supposed to be going in that certain gear. Missing a shift is bad for your engine, and if you're in a race, you're going to lose. It means you let go of the clutch before your transmission was in correct gear.

People shift from 1st all the way over to 5th because you get optimal gas mileage. The Corvette C6 Z06 for example.
