In super mario world for snes why were some of the levels red dots, and some yellow dots?

The above answer is right, every red dot has a regular and a hidden exit (for example, the first level to the right of Yoshi's House has 2 exits--one leads back to Yoshi's House, the other leads on through the area).  You'll need to find all these exits to completely finish the game--the Forest of Illusion is where it's most difficult to do this.  If you need some help, check http://www.gamefaqs.com and find a walkthrough.  Hope this helps, good luck and kudos for playing awesome retro games!! :-)

  2. The red dots have two exits. So, there will be a key and a secret door somewhere. To lead to another big switch like the yellow block switch at the start, or to get to star road and stuff.
