For example, the difference between a 18 x 20 pattern a 16 X 18 or even a 18 x 19 does the type of racket you are using come into factor??

  1. theoritically, the higher the density string bed (i.e. 18x20) the more control you get, the bigger the "holes" (grids) the more power you get.

i recall Kennex used to have a micro system string pattern that was 22x20, reguire 17 guage or thinner strings.

  2. The differences in the string patterns comes from the density of the string-bed.

A 16x18/19 will have more power and spin.

A 18x20 will have more control and feel.

  3. Each racket size and build can handle particular kinds of string patterns. An open string pattern (fewer strings and more space in the openings) gives increased power and decreased control, but there's extra spin created by having each string "bite" into the ball harder. A denser pattern gives more control. The amount of power is not greatly influenced and is more a reflection of the tension of the strings.
