  1. Of the 5 remaining regiments of the FFL 3 are permanently based in France, their role today is as it always has been to protect French interests abroad but now includes at home

  2. The FFL is a foriegners army and as such they do jobs that French nationals won't do.  The old saying was "you joined the legion to die, so I'll send you where you can die".

  3. The Army of France is open to all French citizens and those of  French colonies.

The Foreign Legion is open to anyone regardless of Nationality.

The Legion was formed for military duties abroad in French Colonies - notably North Africa. The main role of the French Army was to provide homeland defence.

  4. The Foreign Legion trains 10 times harder and are expected to fight unto the death.  Since only foreigners are allowed to enlist, this has always suited the French government quite well.  The French Army has a high rate of carpal tunnel syndrome from white-flag waving practice.  The Foreign Legion was formed to offset this tendency because the French couldn't find enough of its own citizens with the necessary fortitude to protect their interests overseas.  All the officers of the Foreign Legion are necessarily French to ensure that the enlisted die in a proper military manner. Enlistees are often shocked once they find that upon the expiration of their contract they owe the French government a small fortune in taxes, so they are obliged to re-enlist in order to meet this obligation.
