i know that buying a canadian diamond is a guarantee that it is conflict-free but is the quality better or worse than those mined in other parts of the world?

if possible, where would i find information regarding this topic because i'm having difficulty finding it online?

what would be reasons why you would or would not choose a Canadian Diamond?

  1. A diamond is a diamond no matter where it comes from, it is still a crystallized form of carbon. They are graded using the four "C" carat. clarity, color and cut. No matter where it was mined, the grade determines the value and quality. A diamond mined in Canada and one mined in South Africa each of the same grade side by side, you would find no difference. Here is a good link:

  2. Canadian diamonds are rated on the same scale as all other diamonds (for colour, cut, clarity, etc.) and the quality depends on the nature of the stone (inclusions, etc) which can vary as much as with diamonds from other parts of the world.  You can have high and low quality Canadian diamonds just as you can have diamonds from Africa or Brazil.

The benefit of Canadian diamonds are twofold.  Firstly they are guaranteed conflict free. Secondly, the Canadian government is highly involved in the mining of the diamonds, and each diamond is micro-laser engraved and tracked.  So if anything ever happens to your diamond (it's stolen, etc) it can be tracked with a serial number.  You are given a card with your diamond that has the original rough weight of the stone and the serial number for tracking purposes.

  3. put canadian in front of it and it's worthless ,lol jk

  4. I think that a diamond's a diamond, but I like the idea of buying Canadian diamond, because it's easier to find a conflict-free stone. Conflict-free makes me feel better about wanting shiny rocks.

I also prefer to recycle. We shop at antique shops and consignment stores.

  5. No.

The premise on the question is wrong.  A Canadian diamond isn't necessarily better quality than any other diamond out there.  There would be diamonds from Canada of exceptionally good quality, and diamonds of exceptionally horrible quality.  Same with any other part of the world.

Is the diamond certified? Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or the American Gem Society Laboratories (AGS) are two well known groups that certify diamonds based on cut, color, clarity and carat.  Don't get tricked into looking at just the carat weight (size) of the diamond.  The certification should give you an unbiased analysis of the quality of the diamond.

But be careful when you see the "appraisal" value of the diamond as the appraised value is usually much higher than what you can actually buy it for.  I'd feel sorry for anyone who bought a diamond for the same price as it's "appraised" worth.

Some reasons you might want to buy a Canadian diamond could be maybe you're canadian and just want to buy local?  Maybe it would have sentimental value if it came from Canada to you?   Maybe the retailor that sells the diamond is in Canada and you like their service, store, etc?  These could all also be reasons why you choose a diamond from some other country too.

I guess also if you buy a Canadian diamond you'd be less worried that it's a "blood" diamond, i.e. one from part of the world where people are being killed/murdered/exploited over diamond mining as that does happen with certain diamond mines, no matter how much the industry tries to gloss it over.

But in terms of quality, it's more a matter of looking at the unbiased certification ratings of the diamond.   Make sure the certification is done by a third-party respected group like GIA or AGS.  Just because the store says the diamond is "certified" by them to be such-and-such clarity, color, carat, etc can be bull since they'd naturally be biased.   You want the store to pay for that third-party ceritification from a respected & recognized international diamond grading organization.

Btw full disclosure in that I'm Canadian myself, but that's not influencing my answer.

  6. Better.

  7. I don't think it matters where the diamond was mined.  Because there are objective standards for judging the quality of diamonds.  And the value of a diamond depends on that criteria and not on where the diamond came from.

  8. was the diamond from canada, or just being sold in canada? because in the united states and canada, most diamonds that are sold are actually from south africa.

  9. All diamonds are graded the same. Can't tell any of them apart.Just like oil and grain, the price is the same worldwide.Go for the canadian.hey.

  10. I do not think it has to be with the country were the diamond  comes from. I think it is  a very individual situation which each diamond. You have to look at each diamond individually and check what are its qualities. Check its certification.

  11. ugh. first of all your question is way to BROAD. your comparing a Canadian diamond, to all the other diamonds all over the world. its all about the karots lady...

  12. i think so
