  1. UK dad is correct - in any branch of the forces its the senior NCO's who run things day to day

  2. The rank captain is the highest rank you can get before you start heading into things like commodore and admiral.

They would run a large ship or a base.  They are the quivilant of a full colonal in the army.  On board an acutal ship the captain is one step up from God.  Defintaly the most clout.

  3. On paper it's the officers.

    In reality it's the CPO.

  4. The senior person on a ship is the Commanding Officer.

Depending on the size of the ship it can be anything from a Lieutenant to a Four Ring Captain RN

On a shore base it is usually a Commodore.

  5. Admiral of the fleet       on land

    Captain        on board
