  1. its where you bet real money

instead of a "buy in" tournment

    where you have chips

  2. There are two basic types of poker, cash games, also called ring games, and tournament games.

In a tournament players buy in for a certain amount of money, they are given a certain number of chips, that have no actual cash value.  Everyone in the tournament plays until they are out of chips.  The person who ends up with all the chips is the winner.  Most of the poker you see on TV is this kind of poker.

A cash game is a different proposition.  In such a game you exchange your money for chips, which have an actual cash value.  You are free to leave the game at any time and cash your chips back into real money.  Generally you can buy more chips if you go broke.  The blinds and (if applicable) antes do not increase during the game (unless it's a more complicated variation of a cash game like a kill game).

There are some fundamental differences between strategy used in cash games and tournament games.  In tournament games unless there is a re-buy option, once you lose your chips you cannot continue to play.  This will impact some of the decisions made.  In tournament play, the longer you last, the more money you will win.  So sometimes it is correct to lay down strong hands if you think you can move up in the money.

When it comes to professional poker players some specialize in cash games, others in tournaments.  Some players are good at both.  So generally if you are watching poker on TV, and an announcer says that a player is a good cash player, it means this player not only can compete in world class tournaments, but can also hold his own in cash games too.

  3. It means you're good at cash games.  A cash game is any poker game that isn't a tournament (i.e. chips represent actual dollars or euros or pounds or whatever, and you can get up whenever you want and cash the chips in for money)

  4. There are 3 major variations of poker, tournament, Sit and Gos and then cash. Each is actually its own very unique animal and different players will be better suited to different styles. That is, a good cash player might actually only be a mediocre SnG player.

Tournament Poker refers to poker games where there are usually multi tables and players play in a knockout fashion until there is only one player left. Tournaments have a set buy-in, pre-determined allocation of chips and blind increase. There are some tournaments that allow rebuys. Tournaments buyins can be free all the way up to US$10,000+

SnGs are like mini-tournaments limited to a single table. Everyone pays a set buyin and 1st, 2nd and 3rd get money.

Cash games or ring games are tables where people play for the actual cash they sit down with. These games are more flexible than tournaments in that you can buy in as long as there is a seat open and leave anytime you want. In cash games you will be risking more money than a tournament. You can play bad in a tournament and you will only lose the buy-in but a cash game player could easily lose his entire bankroll if he is not careful. Cash games can have anywhere from 2 to 9 players. There are some online cash games that are limited to 6 seats and much better for aggressive players.

  5. Cash game players usually play in "ring games".  This means full tables of up to 10 players.  There is a minimum and maximum buy in amount for the table.  You can stop playing whenever you want.

If you play cash games online you really should sign up with a site that allows you to get a percentage of your rake back each month.  Its basically free money if you play online poker.
