  1. Regular aerobics - no.

Water aerobics - maybe, but it's best to wear water shoes for gripping the bottom of the pool.

  2. Some.

  3. Not at any of the gyms that I went to back then. Not on the Jane Fonda video's either. Everyone wore sneakers.

  4. In the 80's almost everyone was barefoot in gyms here in the Netherlands; I was in high school back then and I've never been in a gym wearing shoes, and indeed now you mention it I also took aerobics classes one year, I think it was around '88 or '89, barefoot as any other sports I ever did indoors. Oh, and the one book about aerobic exercises at home I had, had the lady in the pictures barefoot too.

Indoors PE was always mandatory barefoot here, for me and all my friends. Since it was the normal thing, I don't think I ever gave it any thought at all, but I liked it well enough that I usually went barefoot when we had PE outdoors on the field too, where shoes were optional.

Recently I hear from some parents that their kids wear sports shoes for PE now, but when I was at the local school gym for a workshop not too long ago it was still bare feet required. I don't know about aerobics classes in particular in recent years, this workshop was Tai Chi.

And I don't recall of anyone getting an injury or athlete's foot, it's really quite healthy to play sports in bare feet. :-)
