I think we weren't as removed from witnessing reproduction in nature as we are now.  We were a much more agrarian society.  Life on the farm provided lots of opportunities for learning about s*x at a young age, just by observing the natural cycles of life amond the farm animals, etc.  So there probably weren't any "formal" s*x education programs, but that doesn't mean it wasn't talked about, thought about, or discussed.
