Possibilities would seem to include: Simple ice boxes; dry ice; mechanical refrigeration.

  1. The good old fashion ice box.  Ice was also used in refridgerated freight cars, commonly called reefers (no, not that kind of reefer).

    Mechanical refridgeration came much later.
