  1. I don't know who did the very first scientific study but the cigarette companies themselves knew it was bad for you for a very long time (earlier than the 60s).   Check out Wikipedia.  You may have to go to a library (university or college) because this was long before computers were common.  You might also check on legal documents.  The cigarette companies have been sued many times and the early scientific evidence was probably included in some of these trials.    This is a very good question but the answer is likely to be very complicated.
