In the 2008 Olympics, why are the women wearing bikinis and the men wearing T-shirts and shorts?

maybe cuase they like to show their ****. i was watching them play in the rain and one girl was wearing white. her nipples were poking through her bra and her panties were almsot clear at the top and sides. i dont know but theres an article on it somewhere on yahoo

I recently seen an article on this but couldn't find it again.  The point of it was that the bikini's were the most comfortable in sand and allowed the most movement.  I think its just because the women have amazing bodies and spend lots of time on the beach anyway making it what they are the most accustomed to wearing.

the men would go shirtless (as is customary when playing volleyball on the beach) but they represent their country and name with the shirts.

just a guess: volleyball is most commonly practiced on the beaches, where the women playing it would be in swimsuits, and the tradition may have just followed to the Olympics.  go to the beach and you will see lots of women in bikinis and men in shirts and swim trunks.  if people learn and practice under these conditions, why would they want to suddenly wear something different for the most important game of their life when they would need to be dressed in comfortable and familiar outfits?

I don't know about you, but I don't think I'd want to see a guy in a bikini. I'm sure the women can wear a T-shirt and shorts if they wanted to but I guess it's easier for them to dive and stuff in a bikini because they're used to it..from playing beach volleyball..on the beach and all

I don't agree with the sexism and discrimination against women - especially when you know paedophiles are watching the gymnastics only for those skimpy dressed little girls as one I know has been gleefully communicating to one of his fellow pedos (don't worry, we're going to put him away 4ever!) - but that's how the things are at this moment in time.

The women wear bikinis so they can stay as cool as possible in the heat... and one again why would men wear bikinis? If you're wondering why they just don't wear shorts only then it's probably because they need a shirt for their number and country.

Oddly enough, NPR just aired a story about this.

When interviewing the players, the reporter was trying to attach some dark undercurrent of  sexism to the situation.  The female player responded (more than once, because the question was asked more than once), that it is far easier to brush sand off your skin and that shorts would allow the sand to reach areas that gals might find irritating.

T- shirts?- Too lame. but the guys all think no one is gawking at their abs so they do not feel compelled to show off.  Otherwise, they would simply wear swimming trunks.

The women wear less because it sells more. I'm sorry, but it's true. Women's volleyball gets a lot of coverage on NBC first because the two winning athletes are from the United States, and second because s*x sells, and NBC wants to get the most bang for their advertisers' bucks. Of course, the International Olympic Committee knows this too, and like any organization, they need their sponsors.

There is no rule that the women have to wear bikinis.  They wear bikinis because they're women, and as you all know women always want to be seen as s**y and attractive.  Same goes why women wear make up, high heels, support bra, padded bra, mini skirt, back less dress.

Men wear what's comfortable.  But in competition, if required, men also wear tight fitting suit, see: Michael Phelps and other swimming athletes.

And to the person who answered that this is double standard, is that, get off your feminist fort and get into the real world.

The players can wear what ever they want as long as it is a matching uniform by an approved sponsor.  I assume you are referring to beach volleyball.  Remember this game was born on the beach and so people wear what they wore to the beach.  Good volleyball players will never wear a one piece suit because you do not want to have any restrictions of clothing connected from your shoulders to your bottom.  Hence the bikini.  A lot of men on the AVP Tour actually play shirtless during the tournaments but the Olympics require them to wear a uniform.  

If you watch indoor volleyball you will notice that men and women do not wear the same outfits.  The men will wear loose fitting shorts and T-shirts with sleeves.  The women wear the butt hugger shots that is a near bikini bottom and shirts with little or no sleeves.  It is comfortable.

Women used to wear jerseys and shorts a while ago. It is beach volleyball after all and often the train of thought is to wear your swimming wear to games of beach volleyball. I think in the indoor volleyball the women wear shirts and shorts like the men. Tank tops I think. But in the oppressive China heat and humidity I think swimwear for beach volleyball would be preferable. I think where the Olympics are concerned, you wear what is appropriate to the environment. Indoors=air conditioning. Outdoors=heat and humidity. I'd like to see anybody play beach volleyball in full gymnast wear. lol

I've seen in non-Olympics beach volleyball games that the men do wear tight fitting speedos shorts (think bike shorts, but cut to up around the hips and cut down to the waist).

But from my understanding is that there is a designer who designed all the sportswear for the Olympics. If you want answers, ask him/her I guess.
