  1. because Iowa is dead flat.

a dam generally connects the high ground on each side.

Iowa doesn't have any high ground.

well, i did exaggerate, but you get the picture.

in addition, the Missouri comes in below Iowa, so there's not 'supposed' to be as much water.

ordinarily, flooding occurs where the volume is the highest.

  2. Have we bothered to look at the underlying geology of the area(s) of Iowa that are being flooded?

There are some areas of the US that have rocks that are easily dissolved by water and this could've been a possible factor in the lack of levy or dam system in the area(s) of Iowa.

The other factors in the lack of a levy or dam system could possibly be the climate history of the area (or areas upstream from the flooded areas). If the area typically doesn't have enough precipitation to cause flooding of that magnitude once ever so many (hundred) years, then it wouldn't make much sense to build/maintain something that will likely not be used much if at all.

  3. The same reason that they didn't build a strong enough levy in New Orleans. They spent the money on somthing else thinking that the.worst could never happen.

  4. cuz we were too busy planting corn and watching CSI:Miami...

  5. because they were still dumb

  6. y can't we think these floods are a result of global warming.

  7. Because in the 232 year history they've never had a 500 year flood.
