Question:

In the Hotel industry, what is the normal notice period for?

General staff, ie not management level.

I work for a small hotel as a housekeeper. My employer is in the process of drawing up a contract for me, which i think will require me to give a month`s notice, if i choose to leave.

In my previous larger hotel, it was only one week`s notice. It was only a month if you were a manager.

Any general advice welcome, but i would particularly like to know from people involved in the hotel industry, what their notice period is, to get an idea, if a month`s notice is normal for my line of work.

  1. A month's notice sounds excessive and extreme.  I've really only heard (as a layerperson though ;) of the most, three weeks notice and that's usually people with professional jobs such as ceo (chief executive officer) of a company or engineer where they may need more time to hire someone where the qualifications of the applicant is absolutely crucial.

Please do Not sign anything without feeling comfortable with the guidelines and always go with one's "gut feeling" as if something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't :)

  2. What do you want it to be? If it was me I'd want the longest period possible but I am in IT and mine is a month.

    ||edit|| I don't know Jo but I don't see why not. It's not like you are a contractor. Anyway is it up for negotiation with your employer? Why not ask them for how many weeks you want? They can only say no.

  3. Depends whats in the contract. Normally, it's around two weeks.
