  1. First they are called weapons, not guns.

Next in boot camp you will work with M-16's and 9mm but don't get too excited it is just for hands on experience no real qualification process like in the Army or Marine Corps.

If you want to work with weapons on a daily basis you can select the job of GM = Gunners Mate or MA = Master At Arms.  The rest of use our minds for our jobs and have little if any dealings with any weapons during our careers except for watch standing.

We also only go to an outdoor range to qualify if that is what is available in the area we are stationed, most of the time we will qualify on an indoor range or from the side of an underway ship.  The Navy is the bomb branch not small arms.

  2. Yes and No depending on what job you pick.  If you are in a technical field like Nuclear Power or Radar you will never see a gun.  Some of the less technical fields are required to learn how to use weapons in order to stand watch stations.  If you want an M16 join the Marines.

By the way, the military isn't CoD4 so don't get your hopes up.  It is nothing like movies and video games.

  3. In a shipboard setting, each crew member is generally trained, to use the 9mm, M-14 Rifle and riot shotgun.  And a special team may operate an .50 Cal machine gun.  If you're on a land base, unless you are a Master ar Arms or a Gunners Mate,  you probably will never see one.  There will not be outdoor training, like war games ect.  In the Navy the Ships and the aircraft provide the Bang.  Side arms are for self defense.

  4. M16 inside simulated in boot camp.  Depending on your job you might/might not have to have live fire exercises.

  5. Your a bit GUNGHO arent you?

Training is done on Naval bases.....in and out doors.

It depends what weapons training your selected for based on practical excersises.

  6. I don't think the Navy trains with m16's anymore. On wikipedia it says just the 9mm berretta and 12 gauge shotgun.
