In the National league, if two teams are tied and have equal wins against each other, how is the tie broken?

Right now the Dodgers are 7 and 8 against the Diamond Backs. They play each other three more times. If the Dodgers win two out of three, their record against one another will be 9 and 9.

Should they end up tied for first place at the end of the season, which one would go to the playoffs and who's season is over. Please explain why.

Thanx

  1. A Game called a Tie-Breaker That decide who wins goes to the Playoffs.

  2. There would be a 1-game playoff, they would play each other to determine who moves to the playoff. This happen last year The Rockies beat The Padres to make the playoffs

EDIT: It would not matter because The Rockies won 11 of 19 against The Padres Last Year

  3. one game playoff. it happened between the dodgers and giants in either the late 80's or early 90's

  4. There will be one game between those two teams and whoever wins that game goes to the playoffs. I think it happened last year between Padres and Rockies and the Rockies won.

  5. A one game playoff if it's to decide one playoff spot.

  6. It depends on what the wildcard status is.

If two teams finish the season tied for first AND either of them has a better record than either of the second-place teams in the other two divisions -- i.e., one of the two tied teams will be the league wildcard team -- then the tie is broken on paper. Head to head record is the first tiebreaker; there is a list of following options, and IIRC the second item is intradivision record (a given team's total record against division opponents). The team that wins the tiebreaker (at whatever item) wins the division, the other gets the wildcard berth.

If the wildcard is not a factor -- one team will win the division but the other must stay home -- then there is a one-game playoff, winner takes it. Home field is decided by coin flip, conducted by MLB's central offices and a conference call, a few weeks earlier.

So... if both teams are getting a ticket to October, they settle it on paper, no point in using up the aces in an essentially meaningless game. But if there can be only one, they settle it with bats and gloves on the diamond, as it should be.
