    The entire plot revolves around the trial, the reasons for the trial (contested ownership of a portion of the strawberry field), the moments leading up to the trial, the biased witnesses in the trial, right down to the reporter covering the trial.

    Spearheading the prosecution are the town's sheriff, Art Moran, and prosecutor, Alvin Hooks. Leading the defense is the old experienced Nels Gudmundsson. An underlying theme throughout the trial is prejudice against japanese Americans.
