  1. The water stream causes a turbulence on the surface. If the water surface is smooth and still, the diver wouldn't be able to see where the water surface is while in the middle of the dive. Knowing where the surface is helps them time the dive.


  2. I believe that their primary function is to create ripples on the surface of the water so that the divers don't hit a perfectly flat surface. Depending on how high they dive from, the water surface can be hard to penetrate if it's perfectly still and it hurts. Sometimes they use air bubbles coming from the bottom of the pool to create waves as well.

  3. It's to add bubbles in the water so if the diver messes up, it won't hurt them. Trust me, if you mess up on a dive...it hurts a lot.
