When Lister alters his history, and becomes a big rockstar, how come Rimmer is still switched on?

the whole purpose of Rimmer was to keep Lister sane, but if Lister never joined Red Dwarf, why was Rimmer turned into a hologram..:S

Kryten accidentally discovers that the developing fluid can make photographs come to life. The same thing is possible with slides, and soon the crew are stepping into photographs and back in time. The only problem is that they can't move outside the borders of the original photo.

So the Rimmer that gets thrown out of Lister's mansion is the holographic Rimmer from the ship going back in time to persuade lister to join the red dwarf, but lister doesn't recognise him.
