  1. Your theory test is only 'valid' for one year. So if you believe you are more than a year away from passing your practical test, wait.

It's not a question of how many lessons to take. It could be argued that it's all about getting experience behind the wheel, but people learn at different rates and in different ways. One person could pass their test after six months of one hour per week, whilst another person may need years of lessons.

Edit: Two years? When I sat mine only five years ago, it was one. I stand very much corrected.

  2. I think the average number of hours taken by people who pass is 45. I did a two hour lesson each week most weeks for a 6 month period before I passed, and I was lucky enough to pass first time. I also got insurance on my dad's car so I got a bit of extra practice for a couple of weeks before my practical test.

With the theory test, I took mine after 4 months but to be honest you can probably do it before then if needed, as it's mostly common sense! It helps to get a theory book if you want a confidence boost. I borrowed the dvla theory book from a friend which listed all of the questions in it and spent time flicking through it before the test.

    Good luck!!

  3. Ask your instructor for advice on the appropriate time to take your theory but as long as you use appropriate revision aids it's fairly straight forward!

According to the driving standards agency, on average in the UK it takes someone around 53 hours of professional tuition with 20 hours of private practise so if your instructor quotes these figures don't be shocked you're not being ripped off!!

In my experience it's a case of how long is a piece of string. I had one guy complete a course in 12 hours from start to finish, i had a girl take over 120 (!!!) hours cos that's what it took.  Ask your instructor what grade he is at.  The best ones are a grade 5 or 6 and they should have a reciept to prove this so you can ask to see it!

Richard a theory certificate is valid for two years

  4. Once you sit your theory test, I believe you have 2 year's to sit the practical test....So go for your theory when you feel comfortable and are aware of the answers to questions and aware of hazards.

Then you can concentrate on your driving without worrying what questions you'll be asked.

I'd advise 1 or 2 per week until you master the basics. Your instructor..If he's a decent guy will keep you right with your progress and advise you when your ready.

I've known of people ready after 10 lessons and some still not ready after 30.

Continually ask how your progressing...your instructor should feedback after every lesson.
