  1. 16

  2. With the vast majority of public land based transport, trains and buses, you become an adult on your 16th birthday.

Now thats a pain for those people still at school when they are 16 as it means their travel costs double overnight... Ask at school if they have an arrangement with local bus companies where you'll only pay child fares if you're in school uniform.

If you travel by train every school day and you're approaching your 16th birthday get a childs photocard (you'll need a passport size photo and proof of age) and the day before your 16th birthday buy a 3month season ticket at child rate to your destination. You are allowed to use that until it runs out at child rate. (If you buy a ticket other than that one you'll be charged as an adult.)

If you are 13 but look 18, ask the bus or train company if they do a card that proves your age. (For the railways just get a photocard as explained above.) Most bus companies acknowledge that 13 / 14 / 15 yr olds can look older (especially girls) and provide them either free or for a small admin charge.
