In the UK, when can you apply for a provisional driving license?

Do you have to apply when you are 17, or can you do it before hand when you are 16 so that it will arrive very soon after you turn 17?? I want to learn to drive as soon as possible!

  1. just asked hubby he a driving instructor an he say's you can apply for driving licence at 16..........but is not legal to drive until your 17........good luck


  2. For driving a car, you can apply for your licence at the age of 16yrs 9 months, your licence will come into force on your 17th birthday.

  4. you can apply before you are 17 because they ask you when you are 17 and it starts from that date, so you can start driving lessons on your birthday if you wish, have fun

    u can apply for one when u turn 16 and can use it for moped.

    for using it for a car u have to be 17.

  7. yes you can apply at sixteen. on the form it ask when you want your licence to begin, in your case it would be the date of your 17th birthday.

  8. I applied for mine when I was 17, not sure whether that's changed now, after all the stuff in the press about them raising the age limit for driving, it might be 18 now.

    Contact the DVLA, or try their website.

  9. You may still be able to.  I have known people that have applied so that it arrived on their 17th birthday.  Get the forms from the P.O. it should tell you.  Good luck with your driving.
