Question:

In the UK. Do all speed cameras, including mobile ones have to be signposted?

I thought I spotted a police car on the A1M today with a camera in the rear window. The stretch of road has no signs for speed cameras. Could any pics from this camera be legally used in court? Or could it be just a ANPR camera for tax etc?

I wasn't over the limit, just curious on this occasion.

Cheers.

  1. They do, but any sign on that road would satisfy the requirement.  Who's to say what constitutes a certain "stretch" of road?

The only real requirement is that they must not be hidden - tax cameras can be hidden or in a plain van though.

  2. Hamish is correct

  3. As you enter an area you are warned that 'speed cameras are used in this area' so there's no need to sign every road..

  4. Scroll down to "Law changes" in this link. It says that they do not have to warn drivers of cameras and that they can be used covertly.

This applies to mobile cameras but I don't know if the same is true of fixed cameras.

Edit. Look at how it's hidden in this clip.

  5. it will have been sign posted you just missed it

  6. I'm sure you have to be warned that there are cameras opperating in the area, I may be wrong.

  7. There is a big difference between speed cameras and ANPR systems, read on fella's and you'll find out.

Speed cameras - detects vehicles exceeding the legal limit

ANPR - will detect stolen cars, no insurance, etc.

The cameras do not legally have to be signposted as far as I'm aware yet, but you can't really miss them. The principal of white lines and big yellow boxes is just so obvious.

The photographic prints can be used in court, and you may not be aware, but you are legally entitled to a copy of them (posted to you) before you are requried to pay the fine. If they can't send proof, then they can't fine you, simple as.

The ANPR systems are used by Police and Bailiffs, you may notice if you have watched any of the related BBC One programs, Jamie JBW Enforcement has a Transit loaded with the equipment, and they are also allowed to clamp, but must obtain prior consent from the office.

  8. No speed cameras have to be signposted at all.

That requirement was changed several years ago.

  9. no I dont think that they do

  10. Mobile speed cameras don't have to be signposted.

Would you expect a signpost telling you that there may be a police car around?  same thing basically.

From the content of your enquiry, I take it that you were, er!, shall we say, going a little fast?

ANPR is usually operated from over bridges, hand held cameras can only monitor one vehicle at a time so are usually speed cameras.
