If this happened in the USA for instance, what do you think their re-action to this news would be. My suggestion to the British? Stand up to the fat cats.

  1. Demolition of airports. cars. Army Emgineerws help.

  2. Better explain that you mean gas, the stuff you cook and heat your house with, not gas as in petrol.

Many people in the UK, if not most, are dependent on central heating which is powered by gas, so in a cold climate it's very hard to cut back on heating. The only alternative for most, electric heating, is also very expensive and electricity prices rise just as regularly as gas prices.

How do you suggest consumers "stand up" to the utility companies, other than by putting themselves at risk of dying of hypothermia (which has happened to many elderly people who can't afford to pay their heating bills)?

Edit: well, obviously nobody in the UK cares much about this issue, judging by the lack of answers. I'm originally British but now live in Australia and I don't suffer these problems (I don't even have gas and my hot water is on solar power!).

  3. Helen E is so wrong that owing to the lack of answer people in the UK are not bothered.  Thing is we  have all been asking and answering so many questions on this and you cannot answer them all. Thought I would just let everyone outside UK know this.  As far as I was aware I did think there was huge price increased in the US also. I certainly would stand up to the government on this but unsure exactly the way to do it. Letters don't make any difference and disabled people often cannot protest but if there is a way you think I certainly would be all for it.

  4. And what happened to the miners? They all lost their jobs in the end. And the poll tax still exists but it simply has a different name.

Nobody will do anything, people in this country are experts at moaning but amateurs at helping themselves.
