In the USA - can the same City name exist in a State more than once?

For example:

Can there be 2 cities named "Springfield" in the state of New York?

Or is there a rule against that from happening?

  1. I know in NJ there are a bunch of Washington Townships.  Search it and see.  So I guess there is no rule against it.  Just can't have two in the same county.


  2. It would be confusing, but not impossible- they'd still have different zip codes.

    But it's unlikely that two cities would want to live with that kind of confusion- one or the other would probably change it's name.
