  1. The newest county in the United States is Broomfield County in Colorado, which was incorporated in 2001. To help alleviate the problems and confusion in accessing services with the City of Broomfield being the only city in the state to lie in portions of four counties, residents sought relief in a constitutional amendment creating a City and County of Broomfield. The amendment passed on November 3, 1998 and gave the city a 3-year transitional period to organize. On November 15, 2001, Broomfield County became the 64th, newest and smallest, county of Colorado.

The oldest county in the United States is Sussex County, Delaware. The county was incorporated in 1631.
