It basically means you are the low man on the totem pole. You have few responsibilities, and you do the suck jobs. "Embrace the Suck!" Good luck.

Liked stated above, it's just an abbreviation for the rank of Private.

Examples:

PVT - Private

SPC - Specialist

CPL - Corporal

SGT - Sergeant

SSG - Staff Sergeant

SFC - Sergeant First Class

MSG - Master Sergeant

1SG - First Sergeant

2LT - 2nd Lieutenant

1LT - 1st Lieutenant

CPT - Captain

MAJ - Major

LTC - Lieutenant Colonel

PVT means Private Trainee and it`s not a official rank of the army though they have their own pay grade(E-1).They don`t have any chevrons.The rank of PVT is held during the basic training course although some E-2s(Private) might be downgraded to PVT as a punishment due to their inappropiate actions.
