  1. The wise women of the village. Many modern pharmaceuticals were developed from traditional remedies.

    Edit: One example is that First Nations people had a tea made from tree bark that they used for headaches. Strangely enough, it contains ASA -- the primary ingredient in many modern headache rememdies.

    For truly modern pharmaceuticals, it would have been the chemist (as they are referred to in England), or apothecary.
