it would seem ridiculous to refer to everything that was considered a dinosaur as a behemoth. we don't refer to everything that isn't a dinosaur a non-behemoth. it would get confusing. hey, look at that dog. which one? the one shaped like an elephant. so why is there only one species of dinosaur mentioned in the bible?

  1. Actually in various other places that indicate the behemoth it mentions it having seven heads.  It also indicates the Behemoth was singular and that there was only ever one.

  2. I never saw any mention that this "behemoth" was purple either.

  3. according to the bible dinosaurs never existed. in fact according to the bible the earth is only thousands of years old not millions or billions.

further proof that god didn't write the bible. just some guy(an incredibly smart guy).

  4. Did someone actually make this argument?  I still can't get over the idea that some people believe the biblical characters lived with dinosaurs.  I've been so sheltered in the walls of academia!

  5. also some dinosaurs were small

    therefore not really behemoth-y

  6. I always respect the Christians who at least have the sense to admit that the bible is not, nor should be viewed as, a science book.  The stance of biblical literalist is absolutely untenable, and the worst part is, someone who believes it won't even have a discussion about why.

  7. why is it ridiculous,  we use the word dinosaurs to refer 700 different species of "dinosaurs"

Actually using your logic we as a species are not so very smart, because we use the word "bird" to refer to more than 5000 different kinds, or the word  "dog" to define that kind of animal, or the word "cat" to refer to all felines  (aren't we smart enough to differentiate  a tiger from a mountain cat?), we don't really know what they mean with that word, we only know that the writer was talking about a creature that resemblance a T-Rex.

  8. So. The way I understand it is there is a word for an animal that we don't know for sure what it means, because the animal went extinct a long time ago and nobody uses the word much anymore. They need to translate it. They go with Behemoth.

Nobody knows for sure what animal is talking about, but some people guess it's a dinosaur. It's a good educated guess.

Now, everyone gets to be made fun of and told they are stupid for some reason that I don't understand. To answer your question, I'm sure the author knew what animal he was talking about.

  9. Behemoth is mentioned one time in the Bible, after the Flood, in the book of Job, genius.

The description best fits the hippopotamus.

So, did you do any research, or are you just parroting other people?

  10. There was no such thing as a pteradactyl. There was such a thing as a pterodactyl (spelled with an O, not an A), but it was pterosaur, not a dinosaur.

And to answer your question, no, 'behemoth' in the Bible does not actually refer to dinosaurs. Dinosaurs died out millions of years before people existed or the Bible was written.
