In the book 'The Outsiders'...?

When did Ponyboy's parents die? I really need to know, it's for an important assignment.

I read the book cover to cover and it doesn't actually say when his parents died..... All I know is that it happened when they were younger.

You could assume it happened when Ponyboy was 10 or 11, as Darry was supposed to go to college. Darry was appointed legal guardian of Ponyboy and Sodapop which means he would have had to have been at least 18 or emancipated as an adult. Darry is 20 when the book takes place, so do the math.

I looked everywhere on the net as well and this is the best answer I could come up with.
