  1. Dantes as he was or as the Count?

The Count boasting is easy, there's a lot of instances, in "Unlimited Credit" he says to Danglars "What should I do with a million?" "Good Heavens! I should not have opened an account for such a trifling sum"

In "The Insult" he says to Beauchamp "The Count of Monte Cristo is responsible only to the Count of Monte Cristo. Therefore not a word on this subject, if you please. I do as I please, Monsieur Beauchamp, and believe me, what I do is always well done.

Dantes as Dantes boasting....that's a bit harder to remember, in fact, and maybe it's just me, but I can't recall any instance when Dantes was blatantly boastful.

Perhaps this may seem boastful; In "The Examination" Dantes tells Villefort "As regards to my character, I am perhaps too hasty, but I always try to curb my temper in my dealings with my subordinates. I have ten or twelve sailors under me: if you ask them, monsieur, you will find that they love and respect me, not as a father, for I am too young, but as an elder brother."

    Hope that helps
