In the book To Kill A Mockingbird?

in chapter 2 scout says " North Alabama was full of liquior interests, Big Mules, steel companies, republicans, professors and other persons of no background. " This book is set around the time of the great depression, so when she says " Big Mules " what does she mean because i'm guessing this isnt a literal term.
