also, how long would it take for us too be sucked in and effects to start happening to our solar system

  1. On current thinking, there is a very large black hole there, but as far as this distant spiral limb is concerned, all that matters is the total mass closer in than us, and the growing black hole doesn't really affect that.


  2. There is some high density object (that we call a black hole) there.

    Things don't have to be sucked into a black hole. They can orbit it just like any other object.

    (to one of the answers: just because Andromeda is blue shifted, doesn't mean it is headed directly at us. A train is still blue shifted if you are off to the side of the tracks.)

  3. 1) Yes   2) Never, our galaxy will be hit by the Andromeda Galaxy long before anything like that happens.

    Addendum:  Andromeda Galaxy is heading towards us, impact due about 3 billion years from now.

  4. Unequivocally, yes! There is a black hole in fact in the center of EVERY galaxy. Being swallowed up is mostly a matter of time wherein the material is ejected as radiation back into space in small amounts. The collision of galaxies could alter this outcome though not really sure about that.
